DIY: DRESSER TURNED VANITY IN THE GUEST BATHROOM

by

I have been in love with the whole dresser-turned-bathroom vanity idea for a while, so when we remodeled the guest bathroom, I knew I’d be repurposing a dresser to use as a vanity in the guest bathroom.

I found the dresser on Facebook Marketplace for $100.

It was vintage and in good condition, but I hated the flower knobs, and the mirror, which I think is very pretty, didn’t fit between our board and batten wall space, so it needed to find a replacement.

In this post, I’ll share where you can find some of the items in the bathroom, and then I’ll share how the dressed to vanity turned out, along with a few extra changes we made during the small guest bathroom remodel.

DRESSER TURNED VANITY

I kept the dresser its natural color, so there was no real work when it came to the finish. However, I did apply a waterproof poly to the top to prevent water damage.

The vessel sink and faucet came as a set. It’s no longer available, or I’d link it for you.

When attaching the vessel sink, holes had to be drilled through the top of the dresser, one for the sink drain and the other for the water pipe.

We also had to modify the center drawer, but it’s still functional for storage.

The knobs were all replaced with round wooden knobs, besides the two center drawer knobs that are now fun Horse Head Drawer Pulls.

And as I mentioned earlier, the original mirror did not fit between the board and batten walls, so the mirror was replaced.

I found the new mirror while thrifting. I think it was a whopping $15.00.

OTHER CHANGES TO THE GUEST BATHROOM

FLOORING

As much as the world loves tiled floors, grout gets dingy when you live with animals on a hobby farm, so we removed the original tile and replaced it with black and white vinyl sheet flooring.

The flooring was purchased from The Home Depot. The pattern I have is no longer available.
If you’re wondering, I am loving how much easier it is to clean.

WALLS

I applied 1×3 boards to the walls for a board and batten look and 1×4 pine boards for trim. The board and batten is painted Dutch Boy Ultra White. The rest of the room and ceiling are painted in a very dark blue.

SKELETON KEY AND VINTAGE DOOR

All of the doors on the main level are now vintage or antique.

In this bathroom, we have a door that came out of a 1930s Tudor-style home.

The only problem with this door is that you lock it with a skeleton key, which confuses people when they use our bathroom on occasion. It’s kinda funny when you hear them fiddle with the knob.

LIGHTING

The glass shades on the vanity lighting were also changed with some vintage glass shades I was gifted by my brother.

I love the way this vanity looks. I think it holds a lot of charm, and because the walls and ceiling in the bathroom are neutral colors, I can change out the artwork often.

I know not a lot of people keep original art finds in their bathroom, but our house floor plan is very open, and my wall space is limited.

PLUS, it allows guests to appreciate some art while they tinkle.

Happy decorating, and remember, vintage and handmade pieces are some of the best things you can use when creating a unique feel.
