I am experimenting with some mini canvas today, and I’ve decided to make some honeycomb 2″x2″ mini canvas magnets perfect for the refrigerator. The steps are fairly simple, but the drying time between each step makes this project take some time. If you have the patients to set projects aside and do a little laundry or an outdoor chore while you wait for things to dry, these DIY magnets are worth it.

SUPPLIES
You can find most of these supplies at craft store retailers. I’ll be linking to my arts and crafts supply retailer, Blick Art Materials, and Amazon if you’d like to explore the products I’ve used. Blick Art Materials usually had good sales on paint markers and molding pastes.
- 2″ x 2″ Canvas Flat Panels
- POSCA Paint Markers in the colors Light Green, Coral, White, and Black
- FolkArt Craft Paint in the colors Parchment, Moon Yellow, Metallic, Inca Gold and Daffodil Yellow.
- Small Craft Paint Brushes
- RUST-OLEUM Clear Lacquer Spray
- Magnetic Buttons
- E600 Glue
- Golden Extra Heavy Gel/Molding Paste
- Honeycomb Stencil – I do not remember where I got mine, but Amazon has a ton of options.
- Palette Knife or Plastic Knife
LET’S MAKE SOME HONEYCOMB MAGNETS
Feel free to use your own imagination and creativity on these. You definitely don’t have to use the colors I used for the honeycomb magnets I created, but I will share the colors I used on this project.
STEP ONE
Pick a color for your base coat, paint the canvas, and let it dry. I used the FolkArt Craft Paint in the color Parchment.
Tip: Speed up drying time by using a hair blow dryer.
Step Two
Place your honeycomb stencil onto the canvas and apply a layer of molding paste. If you have palette tools to apply the paste, that’s great, but if you don’t, a plastic knife will work too.
Once the molding paste has been applied, carefully remove the stencil while the paste is still wet.
Clean up any excess paste around the canvas edges, and let the molding paste dry. This will take a couple hours.
STEP THREE
Now it’s time to paint. I used FolKArt Acrylic Paint. It’s my favorite craft acrylic, and if you scroll through any of my other posts, you’ll notice it’s my go-to craft paint.
I started with the color Moon Yellow. Then I added FolkArt Metallic, Inca Gold, and Parchment.
When satisfied with the look, let the acrylic paint dry.
STEP FOUR
Here is where the paint markers come in. I used a black paint marker to roughly outline the honeycombs then I added the colors coral, light green, and white.
When I was finished with the paint markers, I added a dab of acrylic craft paint in Daffodil Yellow and another dap of craft paint in Parchment to the centers of the honeycombs. Let the paint dry before step five.
STEP FIVE
Now it’s time to make these DIY magnets pop with a layer of spray lacquer. The lacquer gives a hard gloss finish which I think looks really nice on these textured magnets. Yep, let the lacquer dry before the final step.
STEP SIX
Finally, it’s time to finish up and apply magnets. Well, unless you want to paint the backs of your canvas first. I chose to paint mine first, but it’s a step you can skip. I applied one magnet in each corner with E600 glue.
LOOK HOW FUN THESE DIY MAGNETS TURNED OUT!
I have some more ideas for canvas magnets that I’m experimenting with to add to the Etsy Shop in the future. I’ll probably price them around the same price as a hay bale. You know, I create for my ponies around here. That’s the dream goal, anyway.
Have fun creating. If you make these and you’re on Instagram, tag me @shepaintsforponies in the post. I’d love to see how they turned out.
XOXO
Emily
