Mixed media cow painting

This playful, half-faced, mixed media cow painting will absolutely make you smile if you see it in person. It’s a mixed media piece designed with everything from acrylic and metallic paints, paint markers, embroidery floss, heavy molding past, and canvas scraps that were hand-painted separately.

This painting started with a half-face sketch of the cow on a plain white stretched canvas panel.

Next, I mixed my two favorite colors, Phthalocyanine Blue and Phthalocyanine Green, for the darker background. I do this a lot in the background of my paintings.

After the background color dried, I painted most of the cow with a soft gray and then used a honeycomb stencil to outline the honeycomb shapes around the cow figure.

The honeycomb shapes were first stenciled on with a soft beige acrylic paint color. After the beige had dried, I added dark yellow, metallic pearl, and a bright yellow over the top of each honeycomb, leaving space to show all the colors.

Eventually, towards the completion of the painting, I finished the honeycombs with some additional painting marker colors.

The cow figure had some fun, unexpected details, including embroidery floss eyelashes, metallic silver overlay in areas, and all the fun shapes and scribble lines for a color.

The flowers on this piece have a small amount of texture from heavy molding paste mixed with acrylic paint. The centers of each flower also have small Xs made from embroidery floss.

Another area with embroidery floss is right down the center of the painting, dividing the cow in half.

A small butterfly was hand-painted on scrap canvas, cut out, and adhered on the right side over the flowers.

The floral leaf sections were also painted separately on scrap canvas pieces, cut out, and applied, making them pop off the canvas just a bit.

You’ll also notice each leaf has embroidery floss sewn in the center.
