THE FARMHOUSE KITCHEN AND REPURPOSED KITCHEN ISLAND

by

Welcome to my kitchen! Our kitchen is designed to be farm-friendly, meaning we go for the farmhouse and chippy look. This is really just an illusion to make it feel cleaner. Let’s face it hobby farm life means animals in the house and dirt on your fingers.

Now, don’t get all weird! I DO keep my house pretty tidy, especially since my boys are grown, adults. I’m just saying nothing stays crisp white and un-dinged for very long when you care for animals.

And before we get started if you’re wondering about that egg apron attached to the old window on the side of my cabinet you can find it on Amazon. The project was simple I just nailed the apron on the old window.

KITCHEN ISLAND

Let’s start with the kitchen island because I adore it! The now island was originally a buffet that I repurposed. It’s almost 100 years old and has beautifully carved details, and the ball feet are FABULOUS! I found this piece on Facebook Marketplace for around $375. I attached granite to the top, leaving an 8-inch overhang around the backside for seating.

The back of the buffet also has a vintage door attached to add some extra character and disguise the original ugly back of the buffet. It’s actually the matching door to the one in our guest bathroom.

You can tour the guest bathroom in the post, DRESSER TURNED VANITY AND WHERE TO SHOP THE GUEST BATHROOM

You’ll notice we have the chairs on the back side of the island because, well, we wanted the chairs to face the living room area when the television is on. My house, my rules, please don’t judge me.

Do you see the vintage door attached to the back of the buffet?

The kitchen island is definitely a one-of-a-kind piece. I almost painted it white, but for now, I am so thankful I did not. I love the darker wood color, and I think it blends with the open floor plan very well.

CABINETS

The kitchen cabinets are painted off-white and I also used antique glaze. The antique glaze works for our lifestyle because, let’s face it, as I mentioned earlier, we REALLY do live on a hobby farm, and white would never stay crisp white living here. For a pop of color, the cabinets below the kitchen sink are a combination of antique white and green. So are the cabinets above the stove. They also have fun cow head knobs.

Most items above my cabinet are vintage and thrifted. A great place to find them is to shop at Etsy.
If you’re looking for my cow knobs, type Cow Drawer Cabinet Knobs in the Etsy search menu. I have seen a few Etsy sellers that have them. I will also link one seller HERE.

Inside, the cabinets are where I’ve hidden a pop of color with a soft blue, which is pretty mood-lifting when you reach for your morning coffee mug.

So cheerful!

Of course, the backsplash is shiplap, and the countertops are butcher block, classic farmhouse.

Personally, I love all things vintage and farmhouse. I think it’s a forever classic look that never goes out of style and you can always revamp it with new and old finds.

Anyways, here you have it. A look at my repurposed kitchen island, plus a little tour of my farm and animals-friendly kitchen. I hope you found some inspiration to repurpose and blend old with new.

XOXO
