REMODELING THE PONY AND MINIATURE HORSE BARN STALL SPACE

by

If you don’t already know, Mixie, my miniature shetland pony, runs this hobby farm.

We’re always experimenting or changing things to make caring for her easier.

Mixie tends to have health concerns, and because of this past winter, I decided it would be convenient to have a small space built in the barn that could be heated if needed.

The barn turned out perfectly imperfect, and now I have a pink miniature horse and pony barn that’s too cute not to share.

REMODELING THE PONY BARN

With the price of lumber in our area being so high at the moment, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on new lumber or this project.

We reused a lot of the lumber we already had, and my husband got a great deal on 3/4 inch thick plywood panels from a friend.

We also dismantled a large wooden crate to build the barn door slider, and I even found the barn door rail kits on clearance for half price at Menards.

PAINT IT PINK

Ok, you know I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to give the barn a fresh coat of pink paint.

I can’t tell you the exact color name because it was another bargain deal.

I found a dark pink color in the oops paint department at Menards, and I ended up mixing it with some leftover white paint I had from our guest bathroom remodel.

It took about 1.5 gallons of paint, only costing me around $10.

The blue paint on the barn door slider was leftovers from a chicken coop project.

PINK PONY BARN DECOR

If you’re wondering about the artwork, those are paintings were inspired by an afternoon spent with Mixie and Cedar creating their portraits.

The chandelier and dream catcher were made from old lampshades and pieces of yarn.

THE BARN DETAILS

The entire pole barn for the ponies is 30×32. They have free access to come and go from the barn at any time.

We rarely stall anyone unless for veterinary visits or health concerns, like laminitis flare-ups.

You can learn more about Laminitis in the post, LAMINITIS IN PONIES

The space in the barn that the ponies have free access to is about 15′ x 10′.

They also have a three-sided shelter outside the main barn that is also available to them at all times.

The enclosed stall area for heat is large enough for a pony or miniature horse to be comfortable.

It measures around 7.5′ x 8′ with a ceiling height of 9 feet.

Hay Area

I store all the daily supplies like supplements, medications, and hoof care supplies on the utility cart for easy access.

Plastic containers and shelving help store everything else.

We store hay off the ground on top of a platform built from 2x4s and plywood.

The space is an L- shape and holds around 260 small square bales.

The barn has a sand footing, and we place 3/4 thick rubber mats in the stall areas and along the hay bin.

You can purchase the rubber mats at Tractor Supply.

We’ve had our current stall mats for four years, and they’re still like brand new.

They make clean-up so easy and keep the odor from soaking into the sand.

I don’t think I will never not have mats.

AFTER

I hope what you take away from this post is that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to create a fun, safe space for your pets.

Use your creativity, and repurpose what you have.

My miniature horse and pony barn is definitely not perfect, but it’s colorful, fun, and perfect for this little hobby farm.

Mixie, Shiloh, and Cedar look so adorable hanging in their pink barn, and I know the heated space will come in handy.
